Matthias Ölander, outgoing CEO of Kahawa Pride, revealed how a conversation with Harambee Stars assistant captain Joseph Okumu was pivotal in securing his role in Kenyan football. Ölander, returning to Sweden after four years in Kenya, explained that his journey began through a connection with Okumu, whom he knew while the defender played for IF Elfsborg. Okumu, who joined IF Elfsborg in August 2019 after impressing for Harambee Stars at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, made 42 appearances in the Allsvenskan before moving to KAA Gent for €3.5 million in July 2021. Now playing for Stade de Reims in France and serving as assistant captain of the Kenya national team, Okumu connected Ölander with key figures in Kenyan football, leading to his role at Kahawa Pride. During his tenure, the club achieved historic success, including promotion to the Football Kenya Federation Regional League and winning the KSA Preseason Cup. The women's team, Kahawa Pride Lionesses, finished second in the league. Ölander implemented a financially transparent management model and strengthened the club's community-driven philosophy. He hopes the relationships built with European agents will create more opportunities for Kenyan players. "We now have strong relationships with several European agents," he said. "More management teams are coming to Kenya to see our work, and countries like Sweden and Poland offer excellent pathways for Kenyan players."
